China 2009 Trip Index - Chengdu, Tibet, Qinghai, Beijing

This is the index page of my trip to Tibet, the roof of the world. A last minute decision was made about a month ago to go on this trip from 29 May 2009 to 10 June 2009. What followed was some scrambling to get visa for my partner, two additions to the entry permit for Tibet, and a visit to the doctor's for prescription high-altitude medicine. The rough itinerary is shown in the map below.

We extended our trip by a day earlier in Chengdu and a day later in Beijing. From Chengdu a domestic flight was taken to Bayi Town in Nyingchi county. Then, it was coach to Lhasa. Next was a picturesque ride on the world's highest railway, the Qinghai-Tibetan Railway, crossing the Kunlun mountain range. Finally, a domestic flight out of Xining, the capital city of Qinghai, to Beijing.

Overall it was a good mix of scenery, culture, and architecture. Although for architecture, most of the structures are only a few hundred years old or even less. The lack of oxygen made for an interesting experience especially while climbing the steps up to the Potala Palace.
